Too often we queer men grow up feeling the pressure of needing to mold ourselves to heterosexual norms. As we grow, we can often revolt against heteronormativity and instead try to fit ourselves into countercultural, queer social norms. However this is still conformity, and is not always authentic to the uniqueness that each of us contains and wants to be expressed in the world.

The Freedom and Fulfillment Experience

In this one-on-one, personalized coaching experience, we will move through the following 7 steps in your journey toward greater emotional freedom and fulfillment…

1) POSITION

We must understand your starting position, or starting point: your curent situation, struggles, aspirations, what’s working, what’s not, and ultimately where you want to be instead…

2) PREVIEW

Once we understand your starting position and where you want to go, we’ll use “The M.E.A.S.U.R.E. Map Method” to engage in a profound experiential practice that provides you with a felt sense of the direction we’ll be heading, and the concepts and skills we’ll use to transform your experience along the way. Think of this step like a Google Maps overview of the trip, showing you a bird’s eye view of the overall trip, to help you understand the overall nature of the journey you’re about to take, and all the twists and turns you can expect along the way.

3) PRIORITIZE

With “The R.I.P. Reset Formula” we will explore what REALLY makes you tick, discovering the underlying, unspoken, and often unconscious drivers of your actions, so we can bring them into the light, and use them more intentionally and consciously to create the life that will be most meaningful and fulfilling to you.

4) PLAN

If the previous step (PRIORITIZE) were a skeleton, this step would be the muscles attached to the skeleton, because this step is what provides the movement toward your goals. Without muscles, a skeleton just a pile of motionless bones. In the PLAN step, we use “The A.C.T. (N.O.W.) Formula” to construct your own personalized map forward so you can move on with your life’s journey with absolute clarity.

5) PRACTICE

Using “The Listening E.A.R. Formula” we take your new life map and put it into motion in the real world with Practice, in a particular way: Executing, Assessing, and Revising the plan as we go along. Nothing is ever written in stone, so we listen closely to our own internal feedback and gauge how well the plan is “working” in real life, to see if there is anything that may need to be changed, adapted, or adjusted in any way. Adaptability is key, and is a skill that can be learned!

6) PARADIGM

Making changes can be difficult, no matter how big or small the change may seem. We run into all kinds of barriers, and the most insidious are the internal barriers from our own minds. In this step we contemplate a massive Paradigm shift supported both by thousands of years of wisdom, and now decades of scientific research to back it up, all synthesized in “The N.O.T.E. Framework.” This is the stage where the most transformative work and insights tend to take place, and you begin to understand why I started referring to this way of viewing self and the world as “Subversive Awareness” (definition below). If you think you already know who you are, just wait till you try out some of these practices–you’ll never look at your self the same way again, and that will be a VERY good thing.

7) PERFECT (v.)

In this stage, we simply and intentionally continue on the path we’ve now pieced together, with a clearer view of who we are, what we’re all about, and how best to operate in the world to manifest what we’ve come to know deep down in our core. Here, you’ll simply wash, rinse, and repeat, perfecting your sense of clarity and the actions you’re now taking to make your life something to be truly proud of. Another word we might use here is “Polish,” if the verb “Perfect” comes with a little too much baggage for you. This is the lifelong stage of increasing clarity, and refining who we are becoming in each and every moment. Paradoxically, this is where the journey both ends and begins anew, because all endings are also beginnings. (Such is the nature of all of life!)

What is “Subversive Awareness”?

It’s just my way of describing the use of mindfulness practices (i.e. awareness) to subvert the often-unhelpful tricks and impulses of the natural human mind that often keep us bound to our primal drives and instincts and “need” for safety and security,

…so that we can begin to live into a life based on core life values and personal meaning (rather than being driven primarily by compulsory avoidance of discomfort, and grasping for pleasure and safety).

This intentional, values-based life-map then naturally leads to the ongoing and enduring experience of freedom and deep fulfillment in ALL areas of life… All it takes is a little bit of awareness, cultivated day after day after day…

My Mission

Hi there! My name is Tyler Wasson, and I am on a mission to help as many queer men as possible live more fulfilling lives. I believe that many of us have been handed a life script—by parents, friends, society, peers, managers, mentors, therapists…the list goes on and on—that may have previously worked really well for many people, and may still work for a lot of people, AND clearly doesn’t work for all of us. 

This script essentially and implicitly tells us that all we have to do to be happy is to pick a reference group (whether that’s the jock, the bears, the twinks, the sassy kweens, etc.), do whatever we have to do to fit in with them, follow their social norms, and we’ll have a gay old time “living our best lives” with no regrets.

Don’t get me wrong. Building like-minded community is important. AND so is taking the time to discover who YOU truly are, taking your marching orders from a deep self-knowing of what your passions are, and what truly fills you up and brings meaningfulness into your life.

This goes way beyond having a good time for a few minutes or hours at a time–that part is easy!

What can be a struggle for many of us is how we live our lives, what we do with our time, and how we feel about ourselves when we’re alone, away from our chosen family and friends. This is where a lot of us can get lost and feel pretty directionless.

So what I’m all about is being VERY intentional about diving deep into the core of what makes life worth living for YOU as a unique individual, and bringing together the time-tested and research-based findings and skills to help you tune in to your own unique sense of meaningfulness, and turn down the volume on whatever outdated scripts and social messages are not working for you anymore.

So if you have even the slightest suspicion that you are capable of a life of vitality, then I might just be the coach you’ve been waiting for, to help support you in redefining your life’s direction, reorienting your actions in the direction of fulfillment, and experiencing the freedom that awaits when you are living life of personal meaning, on your own terms.

About Me

A little bit more about me (some of the boring stuff):

Tyler holds a Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.), and has extensive experience in practicing in the mental health field for nearly a decade as a licensed Clinical Psychologist, primarily in university counseling/health centers, corporate health centers, and private practice, serving the stressed-out tech employee population who work for the largest companies in the Silicon Valley. He is also a Certified Master Life Coach, Certified Mindfulness Life Coach, and Certified Meditation Teacher.

In his coaching practice, he utilizes a very warm, empathic, and down-to-earth style that can sometimes border on irreverent (life is funny, and laughter is such great medicine!). His primary areas of focus are identity exploration and celebration, motivation, personal fulfillment, life transitions, career exploration, and of course, personal development. He draws heavily from mindfulness-based/values-based theories and approaches, such as Acceptance and Commitment Coaching (ACC) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and is also informed by the Positive Psychology research around evidence-based interventions for increasing life satisfaction and well-being (i.e. “happiness”).

Tyler is an openly gay/queer man, with a special passion for working with people from traditionally marginalized backgrounds and identities, helping them to embrace every aspect of their unique beauty in a world that, at best, may not always know how to support and celebrate them.

Tyler is personally strongly motivated by his value of personal and geographic freedom, and therefore practices exclusively on virtual platforms such as Zoom, bringing the coaching relationship directly into the daily lives of his clients, wherever they may be located, from wherever he may happen to be traveling at the moment.

Overall, Tyler’s goal is to inspire emotional freedom in his clients, and help them live fuller, richer, more meaningful lives, however that may uniquely look for each of them.
